ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Michael Chen, a New York photographer, views the world through his lens. Constantly challenging himself to reach new frontiers, he has traveled extensively throughout the United States, Asia, Egypt and Greece to bring the wonders and the cultures of the world into light. His exhibition titled "Without Boundaries" at the United Nations (New York headquarters) bought another dimension to his calling.

Born in Malaysia and raised in Australia, Michael developed an inclination for the adventurous life at an early age. His fascination for photography can also be traced back to his childhood. He received his training in Visual Arts in Australia. Having the extraordinary fortune to be the photographer for the Malaysian government , his budding career as a photographer was launched. Dreaming of furthering his career in the United States, he started working for the Universal Studios in California in 1983. New York seemed to be the "promised land" as he landed jobs as a free-lance fashion and portrait photographer. Currently, he is an exhibitor in art festivals.

Of his work, Michael expresses:

"Art illuminates the soul of an artist. Photography is a vehicle for an artist to communicate personal inspirations and experiences. No landscape, scenery, or architecture is ordinary if it provokes a reaction from the viewer - a memory, an emotion, or a spiritual connection."

In his pursuit of perfection in his work, Michael professes:

"The photographer must practice discipline and patience to catch the "perfect" moment. The interplay of natural light, colors, shadows, and structures must be at its best. If the composition of the subject(s) touches my heart, then I can perceive a beautiful outcome. Furthermore, the image must possess a dynamic energy that animates the audience."

The presentation of his work also reflects his emphasis on quality. "I consider the most significant part of my work to be developing and printing. I have built my own darkroom in order to control the quality in terms of color and texture of the paper. Each display is custom print as opposed to a digital image."

Michael's philosophy toward his work can be summarized by Buddha's wisdom, "your work is to discover your work, and then, with all your heart, to give yourself to it." His passion and dedication to his artwork truly reflect his love for photography.
